316E781D00000578-3457462-image-a-1_1456096421194NEW DEHI The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has shut down two of its water treatment plants (WTP) — Sonia Vihar and Bhagirathi, disrupting water supply in east and south Delhi for two days. The situation is likely to become normal by Monday evening, senior officials from DJB confirmed.

Senior officials said the upper Ganga canal has been shut for its yearly maintenance work. “After the upper Ganga canal was shut, DJB took raw water from Yamuna, but due to high ammonia content in it the Bhagirathi and Sonia Vihar plants were shut down. We have issued helpline numbers for the public to use tankers,” he said.

He added that the two plants have started but water supply will only begin from Monday evening or Tuesday morning. Sonia Vihar WTP has a capacity to process 140 MGD of water and Bhagirathi WTP has a capacity to process 110 MGD of water.

The capital gets around 500 cusecs of water from the upper Ganga canal. Large parts of east and south Delhi has been affected, including areas like Greater Kailash, Alaknanda, CR Park, Vasant Kunj, Sarita Vihar, Pandav Nagar, Mayur Vihar etc.

Senior officials claimed that the raw water in Yamuna is polluted due to the industrial waste that comes from Haryana. “The plant cannot process water with such high contents of ammonia,” said the official.

Residents are unhappy about the temporal solution of tankers by DJB. “Before shutting down any water treatment plant, residents should be given notice. The notice came after the plant was shut and there is no water now,” said Chetan Sharma, general secretary Confederation of NCR RWA.
Sangeeta Thukral, joint secretary of RWA (block M, N, P, G & pocket 52) pointed out, “The statement does not talk about October 16. Now we get to know that there will be no water even on Monday.”
Ashutosh Dikshit, CEO URJA said that the central government should intervene in this matter and find a solution. “The only solution for regular water supply is by cleaning up of the river and that requires immediate intervention by Centre,” he said.
